Update: Sanofi Pasteur, the manufacturer of the only approved yellow fever vaccine (YF-Vax) licensed in the United States, has announced that YF-Vax will be unavailable from mid-2017 to mid-2018 because of delays in production. The yellow fever vaccine is a live attenuated viral vaccine. It provides long-term immunity to the mosquito-born yellow fever virus.
Who needs yellow fever vaccination?
According to the CDC, yellow fever vaccination is recommended for people 9 months and older who are traveling to certain areas at risk for yellow fever
virus transmission in South America and Africa. Proof of yellow fever vaccination may also be required in order to enter certain countries.
Side Effects of the Yellow Fever Vaccine
Other than mild soreness at the injection site, most people do not experience significant side effects from the yellow fever vaccine. When side effects occur, they may include:
- redness or swelling at the injection site
- body aches
- low grade fever
- headache
- fatigue
