Influenza (also known as the flu) is a contagious viral infection that effects the respiratory system — nose, sinuses, throat and lungs. Getting a yearly flu shot can reduce the chances of getting influenza.
Symptoms of influenza include sudden-onset:
- body aches
- sore throat
- nasal congestion
While not everyone needs treatment, medication for influenza is most effective early in the infection.
Children, people over 65, and people with immune system problems, asthma, diabetes, or who are pregnant should be evaluated if symptoms of influenza occur.
